Snøhetta has revealed designs for the world’s first energy-positive hotel in the Arctic Circle—an incredible proposal given the region’s below-freezing temperatures. Located at the foot of Svartisen, Norway’s second largest glacier, the circular Svart hotel will offer panoramic 360-degree views of the fjord and use solar panels to produce more energy than it needs. The sustainable building is being developed in collaboration with Arctic Adventures of Norway, Asplan Viak and Skanska.

Uniti officially unveils its electric city car – and it will sell for under $18K

A new startup in Sweden, named Uniti has unveiled its first electric car, the Uniti One. Uniti unveiled its new electric city car, at an event in Sweden, where it also announced that the Uniti One will be priced as low as €14,900 ($17,532 US) when it goes on sale in 2019.

Even with its low price tag, the Uniti One can drive up to 186 miles with a small 22 kWh battery. NexLoop unveils water management system inspired by spiders, fungi, bees and plants

In its quest to sustainably serve the needs of urban farmers, Team NexLoop found inspiration for its water management system in the natural world. Seeking to create a system that is self-sufficient and adaptable to local needs, the team observed the ability of cribellate orb weaver spiders to craft webs that capture water from fog in the air. Hinckley unveils the world’s first fully electric luxury yacht

Imagine silently slicing through the Long Island Sound on a yacht, wind tousling your hair. That’s possible with Hinckley’s new Dasher yacht, which they say is the world’s first fully electric luxury yacht. There’s little noise from boat motors thanks to the twin 80 horsepower electric motors and waterproof BMW lithium-ion batteries that move the boat quietly through the waves.

Daan Roosegaarde unveils mind-expanding 295-foot SPACE installation in Eindhoven

Most of us won’t have a chance to blast off to outer space and glimpse the beauty of Earth at night. But designer Daan Roosegaarde’s firm Studio Roosegaarde recently brought that image of light and darkness to the Eindhoven Station in the Netherlands. Their interactive art installation gives travelers the opportunity to, in the words of Roosegaarde, “experience a new dimension of light, just as an astronaut sees it in an orbit of the Earth.”

UAE unveils plans for massive city simulating human settlement on Mars

Before humans move to Mars, there’s much research to be done, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is getting in on the effort on a large scale with a 1.9 million square foot city. The Mars Scientific City will simulate conditions for life on Mars. The research city could be a step on the path towards the UAE’s goal of a city on the red planet itself in 2117.

BIG unveils Cactus Towers next to a car-free IKEA in Copenhagen

Enormous “Cacti” will soon pop up in the heart of Copenhagen. Architecture firm BIG has unveiled renderings for an eye-catching pair of buildings with a spiny appearance in the city’s Vesterbro district. Honda unveils new 2017 Clarity Electric car

Over the past few weeks electric car news has been overtaken by updates about the Tesla Model 3, but another new electric car also recently went on sale – the 2017 Honda Clarity Electric.
