LEGO reintroduces Vestas wind turbine set, now made with plant-based plastic

.

Lego Group just released a new LEGO Creator Expert set that focuses on sustainable energy. The company announced its Vestas Wind Turbine creation at New York Climate Week in hopes to encourage creativity while spreading the word about renewable and sustainable energy sources.
Lego collaborated with Vestas to make the new wind turbine structure. Not only does the set represent renewable energy, but the plastic pieces are made from recycled plants. This is the first time Lego has issued a set made… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

World’s most powerful wind turbine installed off the coast of Scotland

A record-breaking, world’s most powerful turbine was just installed of the Scotland coast. Developer Vattenfall announced this week that installation is complete on 11 turbines – two of which were upgraded to have a boosted capacity of 8.8MW – in Aberdeen bay. In total, the installation generates 93.2MW of energy, enough to power 70-percent of Aberdeen’s domestic needs.

Vattenfall said that nine 8.4MW turbines were installed off the coast, and two other turbines with an enhanced capacity of… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

Revolutionary flapping wind turbine mimics hummingbirds to produce clean energy

A new flapping wind turbine in Tunisia marks a revolutionary breakthrough in the field of mechanics. Until recently, the field has been limited in its ability to apply new understandings of animal and human motions to machines, according to TYER wind. In the wind energy sector, this limitation has resulted in fairly simple, and relatively inefficient turbines. Using 3D Aouinian kinematics that he pioneered, Anis Aouini is disrupting that space with a new turbine modeled on the unique articulations… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green BuildingEco funeral – Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

Vestas shakes up wind power with a 12-blade turbine tower

It’s expensive to transport wind turbines, which adds to the cost of wind power. Seeking to bring those costs down, Danish wind turbine company Vestas decided to tack on more rotors to get the most out of a wind turbine tower. They’re currently testing a multi-rotor design at the Technical University of Denmark, and at the beginning of July their multi-rotor turbine generated its first kilowatt hour (kWh).
