This Swiss straw-bale house is completely self-sufficient

Traditional building techniques and modern technology come together in the House in Berne, a self-sufficient straw bale house in Graben, a Swiss village located less than an hour’s drive north of Bern. Trun-based architecture practice Atelier SCHMIDT GmbH designed the modern home that was crafted to blend in with his rural surroundings by taking on the appearance of an old Bernese farming house and is powered entirely by rooftop solar panels.

Dubai’s new self-sufficient floating villas can withstand rising seas

Millions of people will be displaced by rising sea levels, but for a lucky few, these floating homes will help them weather the storm. Waterstudio designed a community of 33 villas to float on top of the water so that they won’t be inundated by sea rise. Construction of the community – dubbed Amillarah – starts this month with developer Dutch Docklands off the coast of Dubai.

Self-sufficient Skilpod home generates all its own energy, pops up in less than a day

Belgian construction company Skilpod has produced a prefabricated home that can generate all its own energy and pop up in as little as half a day. Designed by UAU Collectiv, the new #150 Skilpod solar-powered model is a zero-energy home constructed from cross-laminated timber and takes about 20 days in total to build in the firm’s factory in Geel. The timber modular home can be easily expanded and customized as needed and is insulated to passive standards.
