A 1960s Swiss chalet is transformed into a whimsical off-grid home

Swiss architecture firm Frundgallina has dramatically transformed a rundown chalet in the Swiss Jura Mountains into a whimsical self-sufficient dwelling punctuated by a variety of differently sized gabled openings. The architects kept the structure’s exterior dimensions, however, rearranged the interior by dividing the floor plan into four sections measuring approximately 86 square feet each. The gabled home operates off grid and is equipped with a rainwater harvesting system.

BIG designs a high-end tiny house that goes off-grid

Bjarke Ingels Group has revealed images for the firm’s first-ever tiny house—the A45—designed for the prefab-housing startup Klein. Inspired by the traditional A-frame cabin, the A45 takes on an angular form conducive to rain run-off and easy construction. The 180-square-foot timber cabin boasts a completely customizable interior design and can be built within four to six months in any location.

Evaporative off-grid toilets don’t need plumbing, water or electricity

2.6 billion people around the planet don’t have access to safe toilets. Not only does this lack impact health, but empowerment as well: women and girls “face high rates of violence when they don’t have access to safe and dignified sanitation,” according to protein biochemist and entrepreneur Diana Yousef, CEO of change:WATER Labs. She’s working on a solution: a portable, self-flushing toilet.
