Garden-facing timber home uses highly efficient SIPs to minimize waste

.

When asked by a long-time friend to build a garden-facing retirement home in Hobart, Australia, Brunswick-based architectural practice Archier created the Five Yards House, a timber-clad abode that takes its name from the numerous “yards,” or gardens, integrated into the design. To minimize waste on site and to ensure rapid installation, the design firm turned to SIP (structural insulated panel) construction, a high-performing methodology that “provides structural, insulative and aesthetic… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

The world’s most efficient 5-seater car is powered entirely by the sun

Forget electric vehicles, a team of students at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) recently developed a solar car for five occupants that is completely powered by the sun. Called Stella Vie, the vehicle stands apart because it is designed to carry five occupants and is more efficient than all solar cars before it. Stella Vie was named in… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green BuildingEco funeral – Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

Scientists invent graphene paint that makes your house super efficient

Graphene – the strongest material known to science – has been used to create everything from condoms to night-vision contact lenses. Thanks to the ingenuity of Spain-based The Graphene Company, paint containing the world’s “thinnest, strongest and most conductive” substance will soon be sold on shelves in the UK. Because Graphenstone is composed of a lime-base with a hexagonal lattice of carbon atoms one atom thick, it is incredibly thin, beneficial for the environment and capable of improving… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green BuildingEco funeral – Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

Not only does the house live up to its promises but the real discovery is just how comfortable a passive house can be. Read on as I conclude a three part series on building and living in a Passive House.
Passive… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green BuildingEco funeral – Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building
