The world’s first 3D-printed steel bridge looks like it came from another planet

Four robots, nearly 10,000 pounds of stainless steel, and six months later, Dutch robotic 3D-printing technology company MX3D finished 3D-printing a stainless steel bridge. World’s first 3D-printed bridge opens in the Netherlands

History has been made in The Netherlands, where the world’s first 3D-printed bridge is finally in commission. On Tuesday, Dutch officials celebrated the opening of the innovative bridge, which is 8 meters (26 ft) long and located near the town of Gemert. By using reinforced, pre-stressed concrete and 3D-printing techniques, the bridge (which is primarily intended for cyclists) can safely bear the weight of 40 trucks. In total, the structure took just three months to build.

New bridge linking Japan and Russia could enable 8400-mile rail trip from London to Tokyo

The Trans-Siberian Railway is one of the longest rail routes in the world, but it could get even longer under a proposal from the Russian government. The country is reportedly in serious discussions with Japan to build a 28-mile bridge that would lengthen the line. If the bridge was built, you’d be able to travel from Tokyo to London on different routes spanning 8,400 miles.

Self-taught designer builds a secret studio under a bridge in Valencia

Self-taught designer Fernando Abellanas built his studio in a very unusual space– into the underside of a traffic bridge in Valencia, Spain. This tiny moveable workspace has everything he needs, including shelves, chair and a desk that’s been bolted into the concrete wall of the bridge.

Gorgeous Bostanl Bridge doubles as public park, designed for sunset watching

This beautiful footbridge in Izmir, Turkey, offers much more than a passage from one side of Bostanlı Creek to the other. The timber-clad bridge doubles as a cascading seating structure that complements the adjacent Bostanlı Sunset Lounge.
