BREAKING: Scotland bans fracking indefinitely

.

Go, Scotland! After hearing an overwhelming response from the public on the process of fracking, the country’s government put an “effective ban” on the controversial technique. Scotland’s energy minister, Paul Wheelhouse, told MSPs that the practice “cannot and will not take place in Scotland.” Wheelhouse said there is little economic justification for fracking, and that the ban would deeply cut Scotland’s climate emissions.

Over 65,000 people showed up to the public consultation… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

A colossal iceberg is breaking off Antarctica right now – and it’s big enough to fill Lake Michigan

Scientists are preparing for an iceberg which is gargantuan in size to break away from an Antarctic ice shelf within days — or even hours. Initially discovered by UK researchers in 2010, the to-be iceberg has been rapidly growing since 2016. Once the crack in the continent’s Larsen C ice shelf breaks away, the resulting iceberg will be an astonishing 620 feet (190 meters) thick. Harboring 277 cubic miles (1,155 cubic kilometers) of ice, the natural phenomenon will hold enough mass to fill more… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green BuildingEco funeral – Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

BREAKING NEWS: Tesla/SolarCity launches first-ever integrated solar roof and Powerwall 2.0

In August, Tesla and SolarCity agreed to a 2.6 billion dollar merger. Tesla and SolarCity might seem like companies with pretty disparate goals – one makes cars and the other manages home energy. But they both have a long-term vision of moving the planet away from fossil fuels. So it makes sense that they would unite under one umbrella. Musk said, “That [Telsa and SolarCity] are separate at all, despite similar origins and pursuit of the same overarching goal of sustainable energy, is largely… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green BuildingEco funeral – Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

Breaking News Out of New Jersey

New Jersey General Assembly
New Jersey General Assembly

The New Jersey Assembly passed its own version of Death with Dignity today, modeled on Oregon’s 20 year old legislation to allow a terminally ill patient to choose the timing and manner of death. The bill passed by a vote of 41-31 in the Assembly, and now heads to the state Senate for approval.

Assemblyman John Burzichelli has championed the bill over the last two years, quietly at first, and then with more urgency as the bill gained momentum. His sister-in-law, Claudia Burzichelli, testified in front of the Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee in favor of the bill, disclosing her own diagnosis of terminal lung cancer.

On his website, Burzichelli says, “Like society, medicine, palliative care and hospice services have changed dramatically since [a similar piece of legislation was introduced in 1978]. While there are many choices available right now that may be right for certain people, there is one more choice, not currently available, that deserves an honest discussion.”

A companion bill awaits attention in the state Senate, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has announced his opposition to the bill.
