World’s first rechargeable proton battery requires zero lithium

.

For the first time, scientists have created a rechargeable proton battery, an environmentally friendly alternative to lithium ion batteries that with more development actually might be able to store more energy. Lead researcher John Andrews, professor at RMIT University, said in a statement, “Our latest advance is a crucial step towards cheap, sustainable proton batteries that can help meet our future energy needs without further damaging our already fragile environment.”

Hyundai is building a battery 50% larger than Tesla’s megabattery in South Australia

Tesla’s South Australia battery system won’t hold the title of world’s largest for long. Hyundai is building a 150 megawatt battery storage system – 50 percent larger than Tesla’s – in South Korea. And they say it should go live in just around three months.

Elon Musk wins $50 million bet by installing world’s largest lithium-ion battery in under 100 days

Elon Musk has done it again. In March, the inventor and mastermind behind Tesla, SpaceX and other world-changing ventures made a bet on Twitter with Atlassian’s Mike Cannon-Brookes that he could help solve South Australia’s vexing blackouts with a massive Powerpack within 100 days — or provide the $50 million service for free. And he has now officially won. Not only will Tesla receive payment for the 100 megawatt energy storage project, but residents no longer have to sit in the dark during periods… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

Tesla is shipping hundreds of Powerwall battery systems to Puerto Rico

Tesla, best known for its pioneering electric cars and major investments in energy storage technology, is stepping in to aid Puerto Rico in its recovery from Hurricane Maria by sending hundreds of Powerwall battery systems to the American Commonwealth, whose 3.5 million citizens still do not have access to electricity. Because full power is not expected to be restored for months, the Powerwall energy storage systems, which can be paired with solar panels, could prove to be vital tools as Puerto Rico… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

Tesla makes good on South Australia promise with world’s largest Lithium ion battery

Elon Musk is a man of his word. In March the Tesla CEO tweeted a promise that he would help South Australia solve its energy woes in 100 days with a new power storage system – or give the whole thing away for free. Now he’s following up on that promise, having inked a deal with the State government to build the world’s largest Lithium ion battery. If he can’t finish in 100 days, the energy titan estimates he’ll lose a cool $50 million.

“There is certainly some risk, because this will be… View full post on Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green BuildingEco funeral – Inhabitat – Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building
