‘Ecofunerals’ on the rise in the US

Evironmentally conscious Americans are opting for what are known as “ecofunerals.” The conventional US funeral is expensive and environmentally unfreindly. On the other hand,”green” funerals are cheaper than the traditional ones and appeal to the budget conscious as well. A “green” burial is one where the decedent is buried without toxic embalming, an outer burial container, concrete liner or metal vault, in a 100 per cent biodegradable container. Al Jazeera’s Rob Reynolds reporting from Ferndale, Washington.

Look, it’s a private business. All of the programs listed in the video are government-funded, so it’s not like the tax payers are funding these expensive funerals, it is just another business.

If possible, I look forward to digging my own grave and building my own coffin, maybe starting a transplant grape vine – they do well planted over bones. Preferably pre-death activities; it’d be pretty creepy for me to get up off the table with a to-do list. (More seriously – the funeral of a cousin of mine contributed to the bankruptcy of my uncle. It’s a fucked up system.)

is not a matter of religion! they’re doing it now the way most countries do it since ages. here in europe we don’t use balming and cementing and steel containers (well there are always, everywhere, exeptions). the lagerst religion in europe is christianity. so please, my muslim brothers, let’s share the world, not argue for it…

The American government makes a ton off people dying. There is death tax, estate tax, and extra tax and criminal charges (fines) if it is by suicide. They also heavily restrict how you can be buried and where. These places have to fight tooth and nail to maintain their licences. I want an open funeral pyre, but it’s illegal here without permits costing <$20,000. My government is so busy paying the corporations, they are raping their people.

finally, we in the west are waking up about this…my family already knows that i don’t believe in caskets, etc. …personally, I like the idea of a properly made funeral pyre….better than cremation….ashes to ashes, dust to dust, yes…let’s take much better care of our world & the people who will continue to live in it.

i wouldn’t mind being buried this way. toss some vegetable seeds next to my body. give the food to the poor. :)

Just tossing the dead body in a hole is the best “green” option. I don’t see why anyone would cough out a couple grand for an expensive coughin anyways. The person you are buying the coughin for is dead, it isn’t like they will see it.

oh please, what a load of b.s., that’s just more eco-marketing, cremation is the best “green” option
