Court orders Monsanto to pay $289 million in cancer trial

Weedkiller company Monsanto was ordered to pay $289 million to a school groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, who accused the Bayer subsidiary of giving him cancer. On Friday, a California jury ruled that the company acted with knowledge that risks of cancer were possible when allowing their weedkillers such as Roundup to remain on the market with no hazard indications. The sum consists of $39 million in compensatory damages with the remaining $250 million accorded for punitive damages.

France plans to make recycled plastic bottles less expensive

France has announced that it will intensify regulations on plastics use according to its Environmental Ministry. The movement includes making bottles manufactured using recycled plastic less expensive with the aim of deterring companies from introducing new plastics to the market. The government is also in the works of negotiating increased taxes on landfill while reducing those to value-added recycling activities.
